August Nagel, geboren nahe T\u00fcbingen als eines von neun Kindern, gr\u00fcndet mit 26 Jahren zusammen mit seinem Schulfreund Carl Drexler die Firma \u201eNagel und Drexler\u201c bei Stuttgart. Heute wohl ein erfolgreiches \u201eStartup\u201c, entwickelt sich die junge Firma vor allem Dank der Plattenkamera \u201eContessa\u201c, der \u201eGr\u00e4fin\u201c, rasch zum Erfolg. So erfolgreich, dass man schnell entscheidet die Firma fortan \u201eContessa\u201c zu nennen. Wenig sp\u00e4ter fusioniert Contessa mit dem Kamerawerk Nettel. Dabei handelt es sich ebenfalls um eine Firma eines schw\u00e4bischen T\u00fcfftlers &#8211; Robert Mayer. Zusammen mit Max K\u00f6rner gr\u00fcndete dieser ebenfalls 1908 in Heilbronn-Sontheim das \u201eS\u00fcddeutsche Camerawerk K\u00f6rner Et Mayer GmbH\u201c, welches sp\u00e4ter ebenfalls nach einem Kameramodell benannt wird &#8211; der Nettel. 1919 sieht sich Robert Mayer, mehr T\u00fcfftler als Gesch\u00e4ftsmann, aufgrund der wirtschaftlichen Lage zur Fusion mit Nagel zur \u201eContessa-Nettel AG\u201c gezwungen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/altglasfieber.de\/altglas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Retina-10-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/altglasfieber.de\/altglas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Retina-10-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/altglasfieber.de\/altglas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Retina-10-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/altglasfieber.de\/altglas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Retina-10-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/altglasfieber.de\/altglas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Retina-10.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>1926 besch\u00e4ftigt Nagel bereits 1500 Mitarbeiter. Angeschlagen und durch die negativen Folgen vom Weltkrieg und Wirtschaftskrise wird allerdings auch \u201eContessa-Nettel\u201c mit anderen Firmen, der Ernemann, ICA und Goerz, Teil der neuen Zeiss Ikon AG mit Sitz in Dresden. In der neuen Funktion als Vorstandsmitglied und Leiter der Fabrikation geht Nagel 1926 ins ferne Dresden um bereits 1927, wegen seines angeblichen Temperaments und Bed\u00fcrfnis nach unternehmerischer Freiheit, seinen R\u00fccktritt anzubieten. \u201eContessa\u201c \u00fcberlebt wenigstens dem Namen nach noch lange Zeit bei Contax, Pentacon oder Contaflex. Aber auch die Firma \u201eNettel\u201c bleibt im Nettar oder dem Sonnar erhalten. Letzteres ist urspr\u00fcnglich nach der Sonne, welche sich im \u201esprechendem Wappen\u201c von Sontheim als Abbild finden l\u00e4sst, benannt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ausgezahlt und raus aus der Zeiss Ikon AG macht sich Nagel gleich wieder ans Werk. Er kehrt nach Stuttgart zur\u00fcck und erwirbt in Stuttgart-Wangen eine Maschinenfabrik. Von dort aus startet er eine neue Kameraproduktion, um sich wieder an die Spitze deutscher Kamerahersteller zu positionieren. Allerdings macht er keine gro\u00dfen Spr\u00fcnge und ben\u00f6tigt einen finanzstarken Partner. Diesen findet er in Kodak Eastman, welche bereits seit 1927 auch Filme in Deutschland produziert.<strong> <\/strong>Ziel von Kodak ist es bereits seit der Kodak Brownie oder der Kodak Vest Pocket, eine Nische zum Massenmarkt zu machen und diese im Anschluss mit Verbrauchsmaterial zu beliefern und auch die komplette Laborleistungen anzubieten. Nicht umsonst lautet ein fr\u00fches Werbeversprechen seit der Kodak Brownie \u201eSie dr\u00fccken auf den Knopf &#8211; wir machen den Rest!\u201c.<strong> <\/strong>Kodak ist von Hause aus weniger Kameraproduzent, sondern kommt aus der Chemie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/altglasfieber.de\/altglas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Retina-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1442\" srcset=\"https:\/\/altglasfieber.de\/altglas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Retina-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/altglasfieber.de\/altglas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Retina-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/altglasfieber.de\/altglas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Retina-1-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/altglasfieber.de\/altglas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Retina-1.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Bei der \u00dcbernahme durch Kodak wird sich Nagel erstaunlicherweise schnell einig. Ein Grund mag darin liegen, dass Nagel Generaldirektor mit entsprechender Souver\u00e4nit\u00e4t bleibt. Diese Handlungsfreiheit ist nun allerdings mit entsprechender Finanzkraft aus dem Mutterkonzern gepaart. Mittel, um in Stuttgart die Modellreihe der Retina zu entwicklen und in den Folgejahren stetig zu verbessern. In der Anfangszeit tragen die in Stuttgarter Kameras neben dem Namen Kodak immer noch den Zusatz \u201eDr. Nagel Werk Stuttgart\u201c. Mit dem Patent auf die 135er Kleinbildpatrone gelingt Nagel und damit Kodak ein neuer Coup. Diese passte in alle vorhandenen Systeme und Nagel hatte vor allem die ideale Kamera dazu. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"704\" src=\"https:\/\/altglasfieber.de\/altglas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Retina-8-1024x704.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1462\" srcset=\"https:\/\/altglasfieber.de\/altglas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Retina-8-1024x704.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/altglasfieber.de\/altglas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Retina-8-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/altglasfieber.de\/altglas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Retina-8-768x528.jpg 768w, https:\/\/altglasfieber.de\/altglas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Retina-8.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Zun\u00e4chst in Deutschland, sp\u00e4ter erst in Amerika patentiert existiert diese Form der Kleinbildpatrone bis heute. August Nagel stirbt 1943. Das Werk Stuttgart-Wangen produziert kurz darauf keine Kameras mehr und wird zum R\u00fcstungsbetrieb umfunktioniert. Im zweiten Weltkrieg f\u00e4llt das Werk teilweise einem Bombenangriff zum Opfer. Im Jahre 1946 wird die Fertigung von Kameras wieder aufgenommen und die Modellreihe Retina wiederbelebt. Der Sohn von Nagel arbeitet als Vorstandsvorsitzender der Kodak Deutschland AG erfolgreich weiter. In der Folgezeit verliert der Standort Stuttgart-Wangen nicht an Bedeutung, jedoch setzt sich langsam die multinationale Produktreihe durch. Mitte der 1960er verschwindet die \u201eKlapp\u201c-Retina aus dem Produktprogramm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/altglasfieber.de\/altglas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Retina-9-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1463\" srcset=\"https:\/\/altglasfieber.de\/altglas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Retina-9-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/altglasfieber.de\/altglas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Retina-9-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/altglasfieber.de\/altglas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Retina-9-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/altglasfieber.de\/altglas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Retina-9.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Die Bezeichnung der Kodak Retina als \u201eschw\u00e4bische Leica\u201c trifft \u201eteils\u201c zu. Design, Verschlusstechnik und vor allem Zielgruppe unterscheiden sich wesentlich. Design und Technik sind fernab der vielen Leicakopien. Ohne Balgen und mit richtigen Wechseloptiken liegt der Vergleich mit der Kodak Retina IIIS schon n\u00e4her. Dennoch hat die \u201eKlapp\u201c-Kodak Retina, \u00e4hnlich wie die Leica, viel Pionierarbeit in der Verbreitung der Kleinbildfotografie, geleistet. Die Retinas sind klassische Balgenkameras mit \u00fcberarbeiteter Objektivplatte, welche den Balgen sch\u00fctzen. Diesen Ansatz findet man bereits in einfacherer Umsetzung bei der Nagel Vollenda 48. Leica bediente aufgrund des Preises bereits eine eher kleine Nische. Die Retina will zum Einstiegspreis von nur 75 Mark dabei mit hochwertiger Verarbeitung der Kleinbildfotografie zum Durchbruch verhelfen. Dabei war die Modellreihe der Retina keinesfalls eine Billigkamera. Trotz des Wiedererkennungswert und gleicher Komponenten unterscheiden sich die Modelle beim Sucher- beziehungsweise Me\u00dfsuchersystem und den Objektiven dann doch. Denn im anf\u00e4nglich undurchschaubaren Modelldickicht waren die Modelle der Kodak Retina IIIc und IIIC mit Preisen von 438,- beziehungsweise 447,- Mark am anderen Ende des Einstiegssegments. Beide Kameras waren teuer und entsprechend mit einem sechslinsigen Objektiv und einer Lichtst\u00e4rke von f2 ausgestattet. Dem HELIGON aus dem Hause Rodenstock und dem XENON von Schneider-Kreuznach. Hinzu kommt bei der \u201ebig C\u201c der entsprechend helle und gro\u00dfe Sucher und die nicht mehr notwendige Klappe bei der Belichtungsmessung. Zum 50-j\u00e4hrigen Firmenjubil\u00e4um im Jahre 1977 von Kodak Deutschland ist es dann auch genau diese Modellvariante, welche in Kleinstauflage als Edition aus noch vorhandenen Originalteilen mit der Bezeichnung Kodak Retina III C 028\/N entsteht.  Im selben Jahr erscheint auch das Buch \u201eZauber der Kamera\u201c von Helmut Nagel, als R\u00fcckblick aber auch Hommage. Die gezeigten Kameras sind eine Retina IIIC sowie eine IIIc mit einem XENON beziehungsweise HELIGON. So hat die Kamera mit dem III \u201ebig C\u201c einen gr\u00f6\u00dferen Sucher. Kompaktheit, Verarbeitung, Qualit\u00e4t und vor allem das reichhaltige Zubeh\u00f6r machen die Kamera vor allem dort beliebt, wo Gewicht, Platz, Robustheit und Zuverl\u00e4ssigkeit eine wichtige Rolle spielen. So wie dies im Mai 1953. Tenzing Norgay und Edmund Hillary dokumentieren ihre erfolgreiche Bezwingung des Mount Everest &#8211; mit einer Klappkamera \u201eMade in Germany\u201c aus dem Hause Kodak &#8211; Dr. Nagel Stuttgart.
