Unter den Folgen der Wirtschaftskrise fusionierte er mit seiner Firma zur Zeiss Ikon AG. Dresden verlie\u00df er allerdings nach Unstimmigkeiten schnell wieder, um in Stuttgart-Wangen erneut eine Kamerafabrik zu gr\u00fcnden. Nagel verhandelt mit KODAK, welche 1931 das Unternehmen \u00fcbernimmt. August Nagel bleibt Manager und damit Herr \u00fcber seine Firma, verf\u00fcgt aber nun \u00fcber entsprechende Mittel und weitere M\u00f6glichkeiten. Mit dem amerikanischen Chemieriesen KODAK als Partner, erfindet er nicht die Kleinbildfotografie, verhilft dieser aber wesentlich zum Durchbruch. Er entwickelt nicht nur eine Kamera f\u00fcr das Volk, sondern auch die Tageslichtpatrone, welche wir heute als 135er Kleinbildpatrone kennen. Diese muss nun nicht mehr selbst gef\u00fcllt werden und macht auch den Filmwechsel bei Tageslicht komfortabel und einfach als in der Dunkelkammer. Als Volkskamera ist die Kodak Retina im Gegensatz zu Leica oder Contax mit einem Einf\u00fchrungspreis von 75 Reichsmark f\u00fcr eine breitere Masse erschwinglich. Die Sucherkamera ist mit einem 50mm f3.5 Xenar von Schneider-Kreuznach, einem Vierlinser nach dem Tessar-Typ, ausgestattet.
